RSS Feeds

rss feed iconMany websites and most blogs that are frequently updated have a link to RSS subscriptions. Using RSS pages, or ‘feeds’, one can find out about updates to the site without having to actually visit the site. This can be very useful when you want to quickly check for updates to many different websites. To do this, special websites or software called ‘feed readers’ or aggregators are used. There are many free aggregators available and it is very possible that you already have one on your computer without even knowing it.

Web-based aggregators: Bloglines, Rojo, Netvibes, Google Personalized Homepage, My Yahoo!

Software-based aggregators: Mozilla Firefox, Mozilla Thunderbird e-mail client, Internet Explorer 7, Safari, Attensa (for Microsoft Outlook).

A longer list of feed aggregators can be found here.
After installing or setting up a feed reader, you can add subscriptions. Unless you are using one of the web browsers to collect RSS feeds, clicking on an RSS link on a blog or website generally does not automatically add a subscription to your reader. If you use a website such as Bloglines, or software such as FeedDemon, you must copy the address of the RSS feed and paste it into the reader.
