This course will acquaint students with some of the distinctive features of the nineteenth century British novel, from Austen to Eliot. Lectures will seek to illuminate relations between social and aesthetic dimensions of the texts we read. We will consider how these fictional imaginings of things like love, sex, money, class, and race help shape the ways we live now.
