New Spring Course: ENG 374 - Life Writing: The Art of Biography

Former English major Annalyn Swan ’73 (and co-author, with Mark Stevens ’73, of the Pulitzer prize-winning biography de Kooning: An American Master) will be on campus this spring, teaching a seminar on great (and highly readable) biographies and autobiographies, from Boswell’s seminal Life of Johnson to Frank McCourt’s Angela’s Ashes. Writing assignments will emphasize both the critical and the more creative aspects of portraying a life. Students will write a book review and—as the main assignment—craft a chapter about a figure of either historical or cultural significance to them.
